The Olds High School boys' curling team won a silver medal during zones.

Coach Jason Jackson says they're the first OHS curling team to medal in the South Central zone since 2015.

Unfortunately that's as far as they can go. Only those who won gold (the team from Trochu) could go on to provincials.

The zones were held Feb. 8-9 in Cochrane. Members of the team are skip Shaun Dougan, second Kael Clouston, third Riley Franke and lead Parker Mogck.

Jackson is proud of the boys' performance, noting they qualified for the competition only as a wild card.

But once they got there they showed their ability, defeating teams from Cochrane, Cremona and Strathmore before bowing to Trochu in the final.

"The ice was a bit keener and swingier than in Olds and the boys had a bit of difficulty adjusting at first," Jackson said. "By the end though their draw weight was much better.

"Once the team won their first game against Cochrane, they got a bit more confidence and were much more relaxed on the ice.

"None of the players had been to a zone-level competition before so they weren't sure what to expect," he added.

"Shaun played an excellent defensive strategy against Cremona. That game required an extra end, in which Shaun made a fantastic raise, as well as a soft take-out played very tight to a guard to remove Cremona's shot rock off the edge of the four-foot. He really carried the team that game."
