Olds Koinonia Christian School won the South Central Zone track and field championship for the first time in its history last week at Foothills Athletic Park in Calgary.
The Royals finished first among 1A schools in the zone, with 71 team points at the May 24 meet.
"I had nine there. And quite a few of them were in two events. Some were even in three events. I think that helped us get a lot of points," said athletic director and coach Ken Terpstra.
OKCS's top performer was Grade 10 student Jeremiah Houben, who recorded 22 individual points, finishing third in the junior boys long jump, discus throw and first in javelin throw.
He'll be one of two athletes going to the provincial championship this weekend in Edmonton at the University of Alberta.
Terpstra said Houben's 48.35-metre javelin throw is further than last year's provincial winner.
The school's other representative at provincials is another Grade 10 student, Bryce Parrott. He finished second in the intermediate boys high jump.
"I expected to do well but I didn't expect to win. I thought I was going to come fourth or fifth. I ended up doing all right," Parrott said.
Mikaela Padiernos, Junior, fourth place in long jump, fourth place in triple jump.
Ashley Coney, Junior, fourth place in javelin.
Faith Hamilton-Harper, Intermediate, fourth place in 1,500-metre run.
