The joint Olds Koinonia-Hugh Sutherland girls soccer team won its first-ever South Central Zone championship in Drumheller this month.

"It means a lot because I'm in Grade 12 and we worked really hard for it. Most of us played through the spring together so it just meant even more to us," said Olds Koinonia's Kyla Bosomworth.

The team beat Drumheller and High River in the round robin, earning a bye to the semifinal where they defeated Olds High School.

In the final, they beat Drumheller 2-0.

"They gave us a good run but we easily had the majority of the time in their end,” said Bosomworth. "They had a good defence though. It took a lot for us to get the ball to the net."

There were five players from Olds Koinonia on the team: Ashley Coney, Jewell Jansen, Kayla Jansen, Faith Pogoda and Bosomworth.

As seniors, coach Clay Kmiecik said they played a vital role in the team's success.

They outscored the opposition 10-2 that weekend. Bosomworth had three of the goals, tied for team lead.

He added they brought leadership to a team that had several young players. The team took girls from grades 9-12.

Although it was a team comprised of players from two different schools, chemistry wasn't an issue. Bosomworth, who lives near Carstairs, said many of them have played together for years, in the minor soccer system.
