OLDS — The Olds minor U15 AAA baseball team won silver and the U13 AAAs won bronze during a tournament in Sherwood Park recently.
U15 head coach Jason Jaffray says the U15 AAA Spitfires lost a heartbreaker; 10-9 in the final of the Doc Plotsky Memorial Tournament Sunday night.
Jaffray is proud of the U15 AAA and U13 AAA records this year.
As far as he can recall, the U15 AAAs have 19-3 record so far and the U13 AAA record is 21-3 or thereabouts.
“We're doing extremely, extremely well right now and just came up one run short in the gold medal game,” he said.
“The program’s thriving.”
Jaffray said the tournament was a good measuring stick for the AAAs, as it attracted top-level baseball talent not only from Alberta but several teams from Saskatchewan.
The Spitfires will continue honing their skills in more competition as they prepare for the big challenge – hosting the Spitfire Summer Classic during the July 1 weekend.
“The big one I know for our association is that the big ball tournament,” Jaffray said. “We attract a lot of teams and into town and it's been full for a couple months now. It sold out really fast this year.”
