OLDS — Athletes with Olds and District Special Olympics are gearing up for spring and summer sports as the seasons change.
The spring season for swimmers began on April 3. Their winter season ended on March 28.
Karen Mengersen, who is with the group, says there’s a chance two swimmers could end up representing Special Olympics Alberta at the Canada Summer Games, which will be held in St. Catharines, Ontario Aug. 5-14.
“Results will not be known until the end of April, but I am told that Erica Poitras and Wesley Wilks did very well in the five events they competed in,” Mengersen wrote in an email.
Five- and 10-pin bowling starts up again the week of April 12. Golf and softball are expected to start up shortly as well.
COVID-19 restrictions really curtailed what the athletes could do over the past couple of years.
For example, Mengersen said their curling season was shortened. On the other hand, the season for Rocks 'n Rings (indoor floor curling) was extended.
“It has been a long wait, but sports are finally happening again," she wrote.
