Olds Bantam Bulldogs Central League champs; Huskies win semifinal

Olds claims Central Alberta Football League nine-man football champion status after beating Ponoka Broncs 33–12

OLDS — The Olds Bantam Bulldogs are the Central Alberta Football League nine-man football champions and the peewee Huskies are getting ready for the Central Peewee Football League playoff final after both teams won their games Oct. 29 in Olds.

Bulldogs

The Bulldogs won the Central League championship after hammering the Ponoka Broncs 33–12 at Normie Kwong Park.

“Both of our teams had undefeated seasons and it showed with a great game against a tough opponent,” Olds Amateur Football Association president Doug Rieberger wrote in an email.

Now the Bulldogs have a couple weeks to get ready for the Alberta Tier 2 – Nine-Man Provincial Championships, which will be held Nov. 12 against an as-yet undetermined team from southern Alberta.

Huskies

The Huskies whipped the Rocky Mountain House Jr. Rebels 38 – 12 in a semifinal Saturday at Normie Kwong Park.

They now travel to Stettler to take on the Panthers in the league final Nov. 5.

“This should be a great game, as both teams led the league all year and are sitting with identical 6-1 records,” Rieberger wrote. “Both teams’ only loss was to each other, so we are very evenly matched.”

Rieberger is proud of how well both the Bulldogs and Huskies have played this year.

“Both teams have had great years to this point and have led their respective Leagues throughout the 2022 season,” he wrote.

But as he also noted, “there is still a lot of football left to be played.”
