OLDS — The Olds Bulldogs beat the Drumheller Titans 56-14 at Normie Kwong Park in Olds on Sunday, Sept. 22.
Although the bantam team won decisively, Bulldogs head coach Matt Sutherland says the game was a wake-up call for the team. They need to learn to play a full 60 minutes, regardless of the score.
The Bulldogs came out strong and with 2:02 left in the third quarter, had built up a 40-0 lead.
But the Titans came back, scoring their first touchdown shortly afterward.
They got one more converted touchdown in the fourth quarter before the Bulldogs got a couple of their own.
“It was a good game. We don’t usually play on a Sunday so it was a little bit different getting these guys out on a Sunday to do it, but it worked out good, the weather was awesome,” Sutherland said afterward.
“We came out strong and worked like we needed to and knew that we could.”
Sutherland liked the way the team played on both sides of the ball; the way the offence completed lots of passes and mixed that up with the run.
He liked the performance by the D too.
“The defence did awesome; they stopped them. There were a couple of times obviously we got caught, but the defence adjusted. They were making big hits and making big plays. They were doing really well,” he said.
However, the fact that the Titans came back shows something the Bulldogs need to work on, Sutherland said.
“I’m not too sure exactly what happened,” he said. “It was just the second game of the season. (We’re) just trying to get them to focus for the entire game.
“So we did have a little bit of a lull in there, but they came back. They bounced back and they started playing again. We’ve got to work out that little lull.”
The Bulldogs’ next game is Saturday Sept 28, when they’re on the road to take on the Ponoka Bantam Broncs.
