OLDS — The second annual Spitfires Summer Classic baseball tournament to be held this weekend has been shortened up due to an anticipated rainy day Friday.

The Accuweather website predicts an 84 per cent chance of rain in Olds on Friday. However, other sites project the chance of precipitation to be as low as 30 per cent.

Olds Minor Baseball Association president Jeff Clattenburg says they’ve dropped Friday’s games from the schedule altogether and have shoehorned everything into the remaining days of the tournament.

It now begins Saturday, June 29 and ends Monday, July 1.

“We just kind of wiped Friday from the schedule,” he said.

Otherwise it will run as usual, including championship games.

Clattenburg told the Albertan that 42 teams are anticipated to attend the second annual tournament.

“It’s our main fundraiser for our association, so it’s awesome that we can still have it go ahead,” he said.

“It takes a lot of manpower” to organize and run it, he added.
