OLDS — The Olds College Broncos men’s futsal team is set for another huge road trip.
After finishing second in the recent ACAC South Regional in Medicine Hat, the Broncos are headed to Fort McMurray for the upcoming Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) men’s futsal championship hosted by Keyano College.
Their opener against the NAIT Ooks occurs on Friday, March 10 at 11 a.m. Then they face off with the Lakeland College Rustlers at 3:30 p.m.
The Broncos will have a minimum of three games in Fort McMurray, with the third game depending on their Friday results as they could either play in a quarterfinal at 4:30 p.m. or 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, March 11.
Winning both matches would likely result in a bye to Sunday’s semifinals, with the gold medal game happening at 4:45 p.m. on Sunday, March 12.
The Broncos, coached by Allan Siwela, won four of five matches in the Regional, opening with a 6-5 victory over the Prairie College Pilots on Feb. 22 in Olds.
From there, the Broncos posted victories over the Lethbridge College Kodiaks (5-1), Ambrose University Lions (5-2), and the host Medicine Hat College Rattlers (8-2) in the remainder of their regional, with the only setback coming in a 7-3 defeat at the hands of the SAIT Trojans.
As part of a balanced attack that saw nine different Broncos get on the scoresheet, Pedro Noschang of Novo Hamburgo, Brazil led all Olds College goal scorers with seven, including a hat trick against Ambrose.
Diego Forno from Calgary followed up with five goals, including a hat trick against Medicine Hat to help Olds College solidify second place in the South, while Aminja Abbe, also of Calgary, added four goals of his own.
In goal, Alexander Ewanchuk of Victoria, B.C. has handled the lion’s share of the work in goal, winning all four matches he started in regional competition.
The ACAC men’s futsal championship will be live streamed at ACACTV.ca, with a weekend subscription costing $10.
