OLDS — École Olds High School Grade 9 girls volleyball coach Blake Machan is optimistic about his team’s chances for a good season this year.

As of late last week, they were sitting with a 2-0 record after downing Olds Koinonia and Carstairs.

During the weekend, the team travelled to Canmore for their first tournament of the season. However, results were not available at press time.

They’re now getting ready for their second tournament in Trochu at the end of the month and Zones, which will be held at the beginning of November.

Machan likes the potential of this year’s Spartan squad.

“The team is a good mix of girls who are very familiar to each other and some new faces,” he wrote in an email.

“Each season, the athletes keep getting stronger and more and more, the volleyball IQ is improving.”

That said, Machan sees lots of room for improvement too.

“We will need to continue working on our serving and passing, our defensive plan and coming together as a team,” he wrote. “If we keep improving in those areas, we will have a strong season.”
