OLDS — The Olds Grizzlys now have an assistant coach to help out new head coach Brad Tobin.
Colten Hayes wasted no time getting behind the bench, as he helped Tobin coach the Grizzlys in the team's home-and-home series against the expansion Devon Xtreme Friday night. The Grizz won the game 6 - 5.
Hayes is no stranger to central Alberta, having played with the Innisfail Eagles last season.
He’s also familiar with the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL), having played for Drumheller and Okotoks. Hayes was named the AJHL’s 2010-11 defenceman of the year.
He then went on to play four seasons of minor pro hockey.
Hayes’ coaching credits include serving most recently as GM and head coach of High River in the Heritage Junior B league.
He has also coached at the U18 level.
In a Grizzlys news release issued Friday evening, Tobin is quoted as being quite pleased to have Hayes join him.
"(I’m) very happy to add Colten Hayes to our coaching staff,” Tobin said in the release.
“He's someone that I targeted right away to be a great addition. He had a lengthy professional career and works a lot on skill development, which the players will gravitate towards."
