Olds High School recognizes athletic talents

Olds High School celebrated its athletes with their annual athletic awards June 12. The biggest awards were given for male and female Athlete of the Year for senior high and for Grade 9.

Olds High School celebrated its athletes with their annual athletic awards June 12.

The biggest awards were given for male and female Athlete of the Year for senior high and for Grade 9.

Athletes are chosen based on their contribution to their athletic program, leadership, sportsmanship as well as their ability and accomplishment within their sport(s).

The senior high female Athlete of the Year award was given to Lauren Mertens who played several sports, such as volleyball, basketball, badminton and track and field.

The senior high male Athlete of the Year award, presented by Chloe Schaber on behalf of the Leatherdale family and representing their new sponsor Collegiate Sports Medicine, went to Justin Cissell for his efforts in sports such as volleyball, basketball and soccer.

Representative Darcy Cruickshanks of Digger Sports, the new sponsor of the Grade 9 Athlete of the Year award, presented the award to the two recipients.

The Grade 9 female Athlete of the Year was Gracie Hodgson who was  recognized for her contributions to volleyball, basketball, badminton and track and field.

The male Grade 9 Athlete of the Year was Cody Gelinas for his contributions to cross-country, volleyball, basketball, badminton and track and field.
