OLDS — An École Olds High School (ÉOHS) cross-country runner has advanced to provincials, which will be held Oct. 19 in Grande Prairie.
Sydney Van Ginhoven of the Spartans finished first in the senior girls category in zones, held Oct. 9 in Diamond Valley.
ÉOHS cross-country co-coach Grace Martin says other Spartan teammates qualified for provincials but are unable to attend.
Martin described Van Ginhoven as “an inspiration for all of our younger runners.”
“It was a beautiful day, great weather, and (we) saw a lot of dedication from our runners,” she wrote in an email.
Divisionals were held in Sundre back in late September.
Martin said all Spartans entered qualified for zones.
“Sundre's Snake Hill provided a hot challenge, as the weather was very warm -- to the point where a welcome wind even turned into a challenge, stealing the breath from runner's lungs on their final stretch to the finish line,” she wrote.
