The Olds High School junior and senior girls' volleyball teams faced some tough competition on November 15 and 16 at their respective south central zone championships, with each team failing to win a match.
The junior girls travelled to Airdrie where they lost to Bert Church High School and Holy Trinity Academy of Okotoks on Nov. 15, both in straight sets. The senior girls travelled to Cochrane and were defeated by George McDougall High School and Holy Trinity Academy on Nov. 15 in two sets each and in three sets each by Canmore Collegiate High School and Cochrane High School on Nov. 16. The junior girls did not travel on Nov. 16 due to poor road conditions.
“We faced tough teams at zones but they gained a lot of experience,” said Angie Dowland, a co-coach with the junior team.
Overall, Dowland said the players showed good progress during the season, winning the league title the previous weekend and advancing to the zone championships.
“They really came together as a team for that,” she said.
Wanda Vandervelden, the senior girls team's coach, said while the team played well, they weren't able to convert points when they needed to against strong opposition. They weren't able to draw on previous experience as well as they could have, Vandervelden added.
“It was nice that they played that well this past weekend. If you play that way most of the season then you learn how to win those points,” she said.
