The Alberta Elite Hockey League (AEHL) released its last picks for regular-season Player of the Month honours and Olds and Innisfail players made the cut.
The governing body for all teams identified under Hockey Alberta’s elite male hockey model announced the winners of February’s Player of the Month for all eight divisions on March 11.
U18
Olds’ Crew Martinson was the U18 AAA recipient. He plays with the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs.
In the regular season’s final month, Martinson accumulated 15 points across six games, bolstering the Chiefs’ playoff aspirations, the AEHL noted, adding he maintained “flawless discipline” in avoiding any penalties during the six-game stretch.
“His consistency and ability to elevate his game during crucial moments underscore his talent, exceptional character, and work ethic. As he concluded the season sitting in second place in the league scoring race, Crew’s unwavering commitment has made a significant impact, showcasing the essence of competition in our league,” the AEHL said.
Meanwhile, Innisfail’s Nate Smith was named the U18 AA South winner. Smith plays with the Olds Grizzlys.
The league said Smith emerged as a force in the league, “showcasing an extraordinary level of skill and determination that has earned him the Player of the Month honours.”
Smith had a 14-point performance in February, which included seven goals and seven assists, which the AEHL said “highlights his offensive prowess and ability to deliver in crucial moments.”
As the leading scorer for the Olds Grizzlys U18 AA team, the AEHL said Smith “has propelled his squad to a commendable 4-1-2 record with his remarkable playmaking and creativity on the ice.”
He’s had five multi-point games, including a hat trick and two dominant four-point performances.
“Nate’s consistency and leadership have benefited his team and made a significant impact throughout the league. His dedication to the game and ability to shine under pressure exemplify what it means to be a top player in our competition, the AEHL said.
U15
Olds’ Sam Weigum was named the U15 AA South Player of the Month. He plays for the West Central Tigers.
The AEHL said Weigum showcased his skills throughout February, registering 16 points in just seven games, and helped lead his team to a successful record of 5-1-1 as the season wrapped up.
Standing six-feet, five-inches tall, "with an NHL-caliber shot, Sam dominated on the ice and exemplified sportsmanship and dedication. Coming to the rink as a quiet yet formidable force, he continually found ways to help his team succeed without spending time in the penalty box," said the AEHL.
