OLDS — The École Olds High School junior varsity boys basketball team is now into its Christmas break.
Their last game, their first in the league, occurred Dec. 10 when they beat Hugh Sutherland School in Carstairs 61-37.
The Spartans finished fourth in their home tournament, held Dec. 6-7 in the Community Learning Campus gym in Olds.
The team's home tournament "was a great way to start the season,” coach Natasha Lester wrote in an email.
Lester outlined the team’s progress through the tournament.
“We started the weekend with a strong win on Friday against Acme. Our players worked hard and executed on the court while showing good sportsmanship,” she wrote.
“The second game of the weekend was against a very strong, and well-developed Bow Valley team that ended up winning the tournament.
“Facing such a strong team as our second game of the year allowed us to identify areas that we can improve going forward and showed the heart our players have as they battled hard for a full 40 minutes.
“Bouncing back from a hard loss, we had a competitive final game of the weekend against Canmore where we were fighting for third overall in the tournament.
“Keeping it close throughout the game, we ended up falling short of the win for our final game.”
