OLDS — The 2023 peewee Huskies football season is over.
They lost 29-0 in the semi-finals in Rocky Mountain House on Oct. 28.
As a result, the Huskies finished the season with a 1-6 record, including playoffs.
Head coach Dennis Yurchevich remained philosophical despite that loss.
“It happens,” he said during an interview with the Albertan.
Despite that record, Yurchevich said he’s not discouraged. He agreed it was a rebuilding year.
“We had almost a 50/50 split between veteran players and first -year players, so to get that one win, I would call this a successful season,” he said. “Honestly, our kids did very well."
Next season will likely be a rebuilding year too. Yurchevich estimates the team will lose about 10 players who will move on up to the bantam Bulldogs.
“We lose a bunch of very, very good players again this year, but that's the nature when you start out in the bottom tier coaching. You build them up so that they can succeed in higher levels,” he said.
Despite the record, Yurchevich says he enjoyed the season and he’s looking forward to next season.
“Absolutely,” he said. “I had a great time this year.
“There were a couple of games that were a lot closer than the scoreboard showed, and I do believe that we could have won more than just the one game, which may have helped us moving forward, but it was still a very enjoyable season.”
Yurchevich has invited the entire coaching staff back for next season but noted the club is always looking for parents who want to help out as well.
