OLDS — The annual December mixed doubles pickleball tournament, organized by Olds Pickleball Club is Sunday.
It’ll be held Dec. 8 at the Ralph Klein/CLC gym from 9 a.m. until about 4 p.m.
“We are running it as a mixed doubles tournament and we have 12 teams signed up. It can be mixed (male/female) or a gals team (female/female),” organizer Mary Wilson wrote in an email.
“We opened it up to our membership in Mountain View County (region) and we were able to fill it with people from the (area). We have players from Olds, Sundre and Didsbury.”
The Olds Pickleball Club holds tournaments in December and April.
New this year is a beginner’s tournament that that will also be held on Dec. 8, organized by Community Learning Campus (CLC) recreation supervisor Larissa Bouwman.
During an interview, Bouwman said she decided to set up the beginner tournament this year “because so many people in the community want to try pickleball (so this way) they can give it a whirl.”
It was suggested that entering a tournament might be intimidating for some who are new to the sport.
“I’ve done it before at my old job,” Bouwman said. “I think it’s just something that’s fun for the community to come try it out.
“I would also say too, the tournament is a great opportunity for the community to come together and meet new people and have fun while staying active,” she added.
