Olds Rapids host home swim meet Jan. 11

Head coach Wesley Wilks anticipates some of his swimmers will break records during this meet and he's hopeful some may qualify for provincials

OLDS — The Olds Rapids Swim Club is getting ready to host their home swim meet.

Head coach Wesley Wilks is hoping some of the club’s swimmers will turn in performances so strong they’ll qualify for provincials.

The meet takes place Saturday, Jan. 11, in the Olds Aquatic Centre. Racing starts at 11 a.m. and continues until 3 p.m.

Wilks says about 100 swimmers are expected to compete, from Ponoka, Sylvan Lake, Stettler, Rocky Mountain House, and Red Deer.

No medals will be handed out during this meet. However, Wilks anticipates it will still be strongly competitive, certainly among his swimmers.

“We are expecting to see some club records fall, mainly in the relays area as in the 4x50 free,” he wrote in an email.

Those expected to break records include swimmers in the girls 13-14 age group, boys 15-16, and possibly among boys 10 and under.

Records could also be broken in the 4x50 medley relay in the girls 13-14 category as well as the girls open category and the boys 10-and-under age group.

“Perhaps we may see some more athletes make the cut for provincials,” he wrote.
