A strong weekend by Olds figure skaters netted a haul of medals and personal bests at the recent Edge of Excellence skating competition hosted by the Olds Figure Skating Club.
Overall, around 300 skaters from around Central Alberta took part in the two-day event that featured CanSkate and StarSkate competitors, including a strong contingent of local skaters.
Leading the way for the Olds skaters in the StarSkate events was Chelsea Parrott who won gold in introductory elements and introductory freeskate. Also winning gold for the local club was Janae Sincennes in gold interpretive.
Silver medals were won by Samantha Powell in introductory freeskate, Allison Land in preliminary elements and Amber Wolf in preliminary elements. Winning bronze was Jenna Berild in introductory elements while the team of Kayla Millang, Allison Land, Kayla Jones and Amber Wolf took bronze in the preliminary team event. Kayla Jones also skated to a solid seventh place finish in preliminary elements.
In the CanSkate competition Olds skaters also fared exceptionally well.
Winning gold were Sophie Petersen in stage 5, Avery Petersen in stage 5, Gracie Hodgson in stage 6, Lauren Mertens in stage 6 and Haley Kosik in stage 1.
Winning silver medals were Alison Mertens in stage 5, Kourtney Asaris in stage 3, Olivia VanDerVyver in stage 3, Darby Gunn in stage 5 and Abby Irving in stage 4. Bronze medal winners included Ellie Petersen in stage 5 and Sydney Mix at stage 3.
Securing strong fourth place finishes were: Breanna Karmazinuk in stage 4, Madison Byrt in stage 4, Nikki Asaris in stage 4, Mona Fazaka in stage 4 and Ciara Ritchie in stage 4.
Coaches and organizers said the event was a terrific opportunity for the local skaters to get a taste of competition.
