OLDS — The Olds Figure Skating Club (OFSC) held its first carnival in two years March 13 at the Sportsplex.
Scores of proud parents, siblings, grandparents and friends were on hand to watch as the skaters took to the ice. The event, which had a Dr. Seuss theme, was called Seussical.
OFSC president Stephanie Symes was pleased to have the carnival back after a two-year absence, but a little harried by all the organizing that had to take place in the lead-up to the event.
“We got shut down in 2020, the week before carnival. It was right before our picture night, so we had nothing. We had no report cards, no pictures, no nothing. Everyone just had their costumes at home," she said during an interview.
The 2020-21 season was another frustrating one for the club.
“We knew that we’d have a hard time with groups gathering so we decided to run a year where everyone would learn to skate but no carnival, no competitions,” Symes said.
"We made it December and everything got shut down. We didn’t see a way to forward so we just cancelled the rest of our season. We only had two months of skating last year.”
This season, the club had a small fundraiser. It’s hoped that that, along with help from a raffle held on Sunday will help cover costs for the carnival.
