OLDS — Local throwing athlete and coach Rachel Andres has broken the Throws Pentathlon world record for the second straight year.
Rachel Andres achieved the feat during Throws Fest Aug. 31 in Calgary.
In an email, Andres said that was the first time she had competed in that event since setting the world record last year.
“I had a goal going in to extend that world record,” she wrote. “I hit that goal and extended far more than I had anticipated.”
Andres noted that last year, she broke the Throws Pentathlon world record by seven points with a score of 3596. This year, she shattered her own world record by another 348 points.
She threw the hammer 46.51 metres (m), shot put 14.55m, discus 55.90m, javelin 35.78m, and weight 16.59m, just shy of the individual event Canadian record in the W35 age category.
“I knew three events in that I had a really good chance of hitting the record again, but I was shocked by the end to have broken it by that much,” Andres wrote.
“And a couple of my events still weren’t very close to what I have thrown in them individually, so there’s a lot of room for improvement in the next couple of years while I am still in the 35-39 age category.”
A couple of youth Andres coaches also did well in that meet.
Jett Rosch broke his personal best in the discus three times, extending his best from 40.14m to 41.64m.
Abigail Ripco recorded one of her best javelin throws of the year, hurling it 26.36m.
Andres and likely some of the youth she coaches will be competing in two more Throws Fest competitions this season in Calgary on Sept. 14 and 28.
