Local wrestler Danielle Lappage won a silver medal Wednesday, Oct. 24 in the World Wrestling Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
She was edged 6-5 by Petra Olli of Finland in the women's 65-kilogram (kg) final.
Lappage started out strong, grabbing a 3-0 lead. However, Olli cut the lead to 3-2 before the break.
A takedown by Olli, along with the caution against Lappage gave Olli a 5-3 lead.
Lappage tied the match at 5-5 with a last-second takedown. However, Olli was awarded an extra point because Lappage had been cautioned for grabbing Olli's fingers earlier in the match.
Teammate Justina Di Stasio of Burnaby, whom Lappage has wrestled before, won gold in the 72-kg class; the first world title Canada has won since 2012. Erica Wiebe of Calgary won a bronze medal in the 76-kg class.
Lappage reached the final after thrashing Irina Neterba of Azerbaijan 11-0 on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
