Olds College is moving up the ranks.
The college's futsal program has joined the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), just in time for the 2010-2011 season.
"The ACAC is where the big dogs play," said Greg Lendvay, director of Olds College Health and Wellness Services, in a statement.
"It is probably the strongest conference in Canada in terms of college athletics."
Futsal is a form of indoor soccer and is sanctioned by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), and since the program started at the college, the Broncos have competed in the Alberta College Athletics League.
Lendvay thinks changing leagues will be advantageous for the college, its students and the surrounding community.
"Not only will it bolster our reputation in athletic circles, playing among contemporaries such as SAIT and Mount Royal University, it will bring heightened exposure to the brand new, state of the art facilities just recently opened as part of the Community Learning Campus," Lendvay said.
He also points to a chance of more exposure for college athletes, given the fact that rural communities tend to pay closer attention to where their top athletes are, and watch their progress with keen interest.
"It'll also help engage our athletic alumni," Lendvay said.
"As we move on to new, publicly visible successes with the Broncos Athletics program, they can look back and be proud of their own accomplishments and time they spent here."
The Olds College Broncos Futsal program is currently recruiting for the 2010-2011 season.
