Olds High School's senior girls volleyball team beat the Sundre High School Scorpions on Oct. 8, three sets to one.

Head coach Wanda Vandervelden said she hoped her players would adopt a team-first mentality.

So far, they've fit the bill.

“I think they've bought into the system that volleyball requires everybody to work together. And you can't be singling anybody out,” Vandervelden said.

She added that players must be ready to step up if a teammate is not getting their individual job done.

“I think this group is doing a good job at that. They remain positive. They work hard at practice. So we can't really ask much more of that other than to maybe get more consistent.”

The senior boys team lost three sets to one against the Scorpions later that night.

Head coach Alex Hutcheon said after the match that his players were a bit tired.

“We had some guys doing cross-country before this and some guys doing football as well so our legs weren't in it. I think if we came out a little bit stronger then we would've been more successful,” Hutcheon said.

He added that his team understands the game and just needs to clean up its play.

“I think we're actually pretty smart players. We didn't let them beat us. We were just beating ourselves a little bit out there,” he said. “I think if we get our passes on, we'll be a more accurate team. I think we're growing a lot.”
