OLDS – Both the men’s and ladies’ sides of the annual HUB Insurance Seniors Open golf tournament were won by out-of-towners.
The tournament was held in rainy conditions June 13 at the Olds Golf Club.
On the men’s side, Peter Innes of Red Deer won by one stroke in a one-hole sudden death playoff on number 10 over Ken Griffith, also of Red Deer.
On the ladies side, Celina Lam of Airdie, who wins just about every ladies competition in the community, won again, beating local golfer Cathy Spicer by four strokes.
Innes and Griffith both shot an even par 72, forcing the playoff hole. Innes parred it and Griffith bogeyed it.
On the ladies side, Lam shot an 80.
A total of 112 people entered the tournament. However, during the day, many quit, due to all the rain.
“We definitely had some attrition in the with the weather. We ended up losing about 20 of them. They decided they wouldn't finish. I don't blame them,” pro/manager Randy Brown said during an interview with the Albertan.
“It was windy and cold and wet, but the majority of the players played on, played all 18 holes.”
In the end, golf club staff got more moisture than they bargained for.
"We ended up getting over 80 millimeters of rain here so we're kind of underwater,” Brown said Thursday.
“They're pumping out everywhere and they will be open again at 6:00 o'clock this evening for nine holes for Men’s Night.”
