The Peewee AA Tier 1 Olds Spitfires #1 are off to the Western Canada Baseball Championships this weekend after winning provincial championships on home turf recently.
It will be the second time in as many years that the team qualified for Westerns.
The 11-player team, comprised of players aged 12 - 14 went undefeated at the provincial championships held in Olds Aug. 3 -5.
In round robin play, the team beat the Leduc Giants 9-5, the Bonnyville Braves 11-2 and the Strathmore Reds #1 13 - 3.
In the semifinal, the Spitfires played a close game against the Provost Pilots, winning 11-9.
The Olds team then took the South Jasper Place Jays in the final 13-6 to win the championship.
Team manager Jody Rice said the team was encouraged by friends and family in the stands throughout the weekend, providing a memorable event for all.
“We had amazing parent support, volunteer support and the kids did an amazing job,” said Rice.
The team was also crowned provincial champions last year, taking them to Westerns where they placed third.
This year, Rice said the team hopes to medal again.
After some much-deserved time off in the days following provincials, the team was due back on the field this week for practices before making the trek for the competition in Manitoba this weekend.
Rice said she was impressed with how the team came together, with some players not having any competitive baseball experience before the start of the season. The team finished regular season play with a 15-3 record.
