The first provincial BMX races in Olds went well according to organizers of the event, which was held on Saturday and Sunday at the MegaDome. There were about 500 racers competing on the weekend, aged five all the way up to about 40.
“It went fantastic and there was really good feedback from everybody that attended the event, and it's just going to get that much better every year. Just a good showing all-around,” said Dale Tucherer, indoor cycling project manager for the Alberta Bicycle Association.
There were about six families from Olds who participated in the races. Tucherer said he hopes there are more local racers that come out next season, building that number to about 20. Tucherer is hoping to build the track in Olds beginning in October 2012, so that racers can have all winter to practise. The dirt for the track will be pre-sifted so that no rocks are in it and it will pack much better. If the interest is there locally, Tucherer said the ABA could also build an outdoor track as well. If the track is built in October, there could be local racing all winter, as well as a provincial race in the fall and spring.
“We've got ambitious plans. The ag. society has been absolutely fantastic working with us. This could really take off,” he said, noting that the ABA has plans for improving both the track and the venue itself.
