Provincial records, gold medals for Olds weightlifters

Four members of the Olds Barbell Club came home from the Canadian Powerlifting Union's Big Rock Open held in Calgary on Aug. 10 with four gold medals. And two club competitors each set new provincial records.

Four members of the Olds Barbell Club came home from the Canadian Powerlifting Union's Big Rock Open held in Calgary on Aug. 10 with four gold medals.

And two club competitors each set new provincial records.

Tanner Pochapsky, 17, earned gold in the male sub-junior athlete 74-kilogram weight class and qualified for the national three-lift competition after lifting 345 kilograms.

He also qualified for national competition in the bench-only category with a lift of 77.5 kilograms.

Ariel Chessall, 20, earned a gold medal in the female junior athlete 84-kilogram weight class and qualified for national competition in the three-lift category after lifting 270 kilograms and the bench-only category after lifting 55 kilograms.

Club coach Mark Oxer said Chessall and Pochapsky both set provincial records in the squat, bench, dead lift, three-event total and bench only categories.

Ryan Block, 19, earned gold in the 93-kilogram junior men's category and qualified for national competition in the three-lift category after lifting 452.5 kilograms and the national bench category after lifting 110 kilograms.

And Tim Bowen, 46, earned gold in the Masters 1 category 74-kilogram weight class.
