OLDS — The Olds Minor Lacrosse Association (OMLA) has received record registration in one age level, but is still hoping to get more players registered in another as it gets ready for its upcoming season.
OMLA president Joe Berreth says the association has received a record number of U7s this year, to the point where they’ll have two U7 teams this season.
In an email, Berreth said just under 100 kids have signed up for minor lacrosse in Olds in past years. This year, that figure has risen to 105.
Usually 10 to 12 youth sign up in the U7 age group. This year, 21 kids are registered in that age level.
The plan is also to have two U9 and U13 teams, so it’s hoped more registrations will come in for those two age groups.
In an effort to spur registration, the OMLA is hosting “try-it bring a friend” nights in the Didsbury Arena.
The first one was held March 7. The second one is slated for March 14.
After that, the plan is to start holding practices March 18-21 in the Didsbury Arena because Berreth has been told the Sportsplex likely won’t be available for them until April 7.
The OMLA hopes to hold a U9 festival later in the season.
“(We’re) hoping for late May if we can get both floors in (the) Olds (Sportsplex),” Berreth wrote.
The 2025 OMLA season begins on the April 11-13 weekend in Red Deer and continues until the end of June.
U13 playoffs are slated to occur in June.
