The Sundre High School senior girls’ basketball squad had a great season, the team’s coach says.
There were very few Grade 12 students among the Scorpions this year, which allowed the opportunity to have more players in grades 10 and 11 join the squad, as well as one member of the team who despite having no prior experience with the sport performed well, said Lisa Bloomer.
"The girls began the season with a tournament in Rocky Mountain House, where they did well, and were able to gel as a team prior to the start of our regular season,” she wrote in an email.
"They improved greatly throughout the course of the season and finished fourth in their division. I am very proud of each of the students for their dedication and effort, despite many students being ill or even injured throughout the season. We are also very grateful to have had a former Grade 12 student, Allison French, come back as an assistant coach.”
A unique addition to the team this season was Sawa Aizawa, a Japanese exchange student who played until January, when she returned home after spending a year in Sundre, said Bloomer.
"She was an excellent addition to our team and a very accurate three-point shooter!”
The squad plays in the Chinook’s Edge South League, which is made up of four teams, and the last game of the regular season was held on Feb. 15. However, playoffs as of last week and this week remained ongoing, she said.
