OLDS — This year’s edition of the École Olds High School senior girls volleyball team has a “good mix” of experience and youth, coach Shelley Smith says.
“We actually have a really good combination. We’re half Grade 12s and half Grade 11s, so we have a good mix of veterans and a good mix of new players to the team," she said during an interview.
Several of the girls are pretty tall, which is also an advantage, especially when it comes to spikes or blocking the ball.
“We've got a fair bit of height in our middle and our right side, so that’s nice this year,” Smith said. “I’d say we’re a pretty good blocking team and our outside hitters are pretty strong.”
When it comes to digs, they’ve got that covered too, Smith said.
“We actually have a pretty good libero,” she said.
“Brynn Smith is our Grade 12 libero this year and she is a really good defensive player and kind of runs the defence out there, which is really nice for our team this year.”
Unfortunately, because Brynn is in her last year of high school, someone else will have to step into that role next season.
“Hopefully she can help train somebody for next year,” Smith said.
Another advantage for the Spartans is that several girls on the team have played club volleyball.
“I think three or four of our girls have played club volleyball and that experience definitely shows,” Smith said.
"Our Grade 12s are just really strong. And they’re confident and kind players and have a passion for volleyball,” Smith said.
"It’s just been nice to see them back out on the court again.”
The team is getting ready to host its home tournament, which will be held Oct. 14-15
