A couple of Sundre High School students recently won medals in track and field events, while several others placed among the province’s top 10.
The senior high track team, consisting of approximately 25 student athletes, captured the 2A South Central Zone Championship that was held in Calgary on May 22, said Judy Jackson, track and field coach.
From there, 10 athletes progressed to the provincial meet that was held in Calgary on June 7-8, with Sundre placing fourth overall in the 2A school division, said Jackson.
Evyn Read won a gold medal in the intermediate boys' pole vault, while Lauren Goulden earned a bronze medal in the women’s junior pole vault. Lawsen Augustowich placed a close fourth in the junior long jump, she said.
“The rest of the athletes did very well, all placing in the top 10 in the province.”
Ali Pedersen competed in high jump, Ethan Simpson in javelin, Rylie Mearns in hurdles, while Nic Ross, Thomas Robertson, Alyssa Lund and Dakota Lafferty all competed in pole vault, she said.
Additionally, the Grade 9 track and field team also performed admirably this season, she said, sending 13 athletes to zones, resulting in a best of show for Anthony Backstrom, who placed second in javelin, while Logan McMullen and Jordin van Vlaanderen earned aggregate all-around athlete medals.
