CARSTAIRS - They may be the best hockey playing sisters in the area, Pound for Pound.
Although goalie Sydney Pound, 10, and right-winger Brechin Pound, 13, from Carstairs are three years apart, they played together this year on the Olds Grizzlys peewee female team.
With the Pound sisters' help, the Grizzlys had a great season winning championships at Wickfest, Zone 6 playoffs and league. The team then went to provincials in Medicine Hat on March 15-18 and won gold beating the host team 2-1 in the final. Both sisters were awarded Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards in separate games at provincials.
The sisters enjoyed playing together and were thrilled to win the banner at provincials.
"It was really cool," said Brechin. "We still have the sibling rivalry but it strengthened our relationship."
Sydney agreed with her older sister.
"I thought it was a really special year because this will be the only year we will play together," she said. "We fought a little bit but I think in the end it worked out well."
Both were really excited to win provincials and be named MVP in different games.
"It was pretty cool because that game I got a top-shelf, backhanded goal from the hashmarks," said Brechin.
"It was really fun because I thought it would be my sister because she worked really hard that game," said Sydney. "It was special."
Brechin has been playing hockey for 11 years, while Sydney has played for five, but only started as goalie last year. Both enjoy the camaraderie that comes from being part of a team.
"I like the team building the best," said Brechin. "It's not just a team, we really get to know each other and it's more like a second family."
"(I like) the girls and their wild spirits, and just having fun with them," said Sydney.
Playing on the Olds Grizzlys peewee female team from Didsbury are Sierra Reese, Teagan Walker and Brooklynn Ruby.
