Skating event a success

The Olds Figure Skating Club can claim an overall victory for the Edge of Excellence Central Alberta FunSkate event on the weekend, and that's even before all the results are in.

The Olds Figure Skating Club can claim an overall victory for the Edge of Excellence Central Alberta FunSkate event on the weekend, and that's even before all the results are in.

Despite the snowy weather late last week, 293 skaters showed up at the Sports Complex to compete in 37 different events over the two days of the competition.

ìThose who came to the arena on Friday and Saturday were treated to an awesome display of talent and skating skills,î explained event co-chair Shannon Mertens.

Included was a contingent of 24 skaters from the local club, 17 of whom were in their first competition under the CanSkate banner. The other seven Olds competitors were all in the StarSkate division.

ìSeventeen Olds skaters participated in their first competition and are now hooked for life,î Mertens enthused.

She made special mention of the volunteers that made the event a huge success, especially considering the number of competitors that had to be dealt with over two days. In addition, the event got strong support from the business community as well as friends and families who came to cheer on the skaters.

Results from the competition were not fully available at press time but see next week's edition to see the full local results, or check oldsalbertan.ca for an update as soon as they're available.
