The Broncos men's and women's soccer teams wrapped up their seasons with a pair of home matches against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks during a chilly afternoon on Oct. 19.
At Normie Kwong Park, the women fell 5-0.
While the men took the lead in the first minute on a goal from striker Qaseem Yusofi, they ended up losing a 2-1 heartbreaker.
The losses cap off a pair of winless seasons for the teams, with the women finishing with a 0-9-1 record and the men, 0-10.
But throughout the season, players remained upbeat.
"It was a good year. Most of us are first-years and we've all come from different places,” said Landon Driedger, a first-year midfielder from La Crete.
"We've had a tough year but it's been very good. Without (head coach) Macky (Singh), we wouldn't be where we were. The last few games have been excellent. Our defence kept together and our offence generated plays and played very well. Discipline has gotten way better and we play as a team."
Driedger led the men with four of the team's seven goals scored this season.
However, the agricultural management student was quick to share the credit for them.
"The goals were highlights but it's the plays that made the goals that were the best. We played some good goals, with some tic-tac-toe, they got the ball to me in the box. All I had to do was bury it. It was a team effort. That's a highlight."
Driedger said he didn't expect to play soccer this year and will spend the winter staying in shape to prepare for next season.
Recruitment will be head coach Macky Singh's key focus in the off-season.
Singh said he expects about half the rosters of both men's and women's teams to return.
After his first year at the helm of the school's soccer program, he added that the most memorable experience for him was watching his players bond.
“The biggest highlight was definitely the culture,” Singh said. “The players are very close-knit to each other. That's important.”
Despite playing against stronger opponents each week, Singh said his teams continued to play hard.
“The players never gave up. The players played on, played on, played on. A lot of teams would give up and throw the towel in, but not this group.”
