Seven Olds and District Special Olympics (ODSO) athletes are training to be part of Team Alberta for the 2018 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.

Karen Bystrom, Derek Hallet, Derek Dukes, Sandra McCloskey and Joey Rempel will be in five-pin bowling training with their coach, Linda Livingston. Mark Mengersen will be training in 10-pin bowling with coach Shelley McInnis.

These bowlers will compete in Charlottetown, P.E.I. (five-pin) and Summerside, P.E.I. (10-pin) May 13-18.

Wesley Wilks will be training in swimming with coaches Courtney Poland and Lynn Lewis. He will be competing in Antigonish, N.S. starting July 31.

"We are so excited to have seven athletes representing our affiliate, our town and our province," ODSO chair Karen Mengersen says.

Mengersen notes the group has begun a new season of five-pin and 10-pin bowling as well as floor hockey, curling, alpine skiing and snowshoeing.

"It is great to have volunteers offer to coach each of our sports, giving our athletes an opportunity to participate in a sport of their interest," Mengersen says.

She says ODSO is very grateful for the support it has received from local residents and businesses.
