Sports in brief: Olds bowlers strike silver at nationals

Olds bowlers Kennedy and Keaton Chrest, alongside teammates Emma Jean Ostrikoff (Red Deer) and Karys Zirk (Blackfalds) brought home silver for Team Alberta from the Youth Bowl Canada National 5-Pin bowling Championships, held May 6-8 in the Gatineau, Que.

The team, who bowl out of Heritage Lanes in Red Deer, won the provincial championships held March 5 in Calgary, earning rights to compete in the junior girls' team category at nationals.

Coached by Tony Zirk from Blackfalds, the team bowled 21 single games during the three-day competition. The four bowlers' single game scores were each combined and one point was awarded for a win over the team they were facing. The Alberta girls managed 14 wins of the 21 games they played, losing the title to the team from Manitoba by a single point.

The team averaged the third highest cumulative score throughout the tournament, at 768.24, behind Manitoba (832.05) and Saskatchewan (781.95).
