Olds girls help Chiefs

A trio of Olds hockey players were front and centre for the Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs run to the semifinals of the prestigious Mac's Midget Hockey Tournament in Calgary over the holidays.

Hannah Mousek, Krista Wilson and Rikki Leonard all featured for the Chiefs who lost a tight 2-1 decision to the Edmonton Thunder in the semis of the girls' draw at the annual classic, featuring some of the best AAA boys and girls hockey teams in Canada and abroad.

In the loss that knocked the Chiefs out of the tourney on New Year's Eve, Mousek scored the team's only goal, set up by Wilson.

The Chiefs currently lead the south division of the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.

Mousek and Leonard are in their second year with the AAA squad while Wilson is in her first following a year with the Bantam AAA team last season.

Colts lose first of new year

The Mountainview Colts were unable to secure their first win of the new year on the weekend.

In their first game since the holiday break, the Colts dropped a 5-2 decision to the home-standing Medicine Hat Cubs in a game that featured 231 penalty minutes.

The Colts scored all three of their goals in the first period, but couldn't hold the 3-2 lead they had built despite outshooting the home side 33-20.

Cody Issler with his sixth of the season, J.R. DeFoe with his first and Ryan Thomson with his eighth of the campaign scored for the Colts who saw their record drop to 8-14-1-1 on the season, good for fourth place in the Heritage Junior Hockey League's central division.

The Colts play a pair of home games this weekend when they host the Airdrie Thunder on Saturday night at 8 p.m., followed by a date with the Stettler Lightning on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. Both games are at the Memorial Complex.

Midget girls make all-star team

The North Central Minor Hockey Association will be hosting a midget girls all-star game that will feature a definite Olds flavour.

Team West in the Jan. 21 showcase in Penhold will feature Olds Renegades forwards Michelle Pochapsky, Alysha Heck and Cayley Turnbull along with defencemen Karissa Jamieson and Becky Lehto.

The Renegades currently sit at 4-4-2 in the league and resume their league play this weekend when they are scheduled to face Sylvan Lake and Stettler, both at home.
