Skating Club hosts regional event

The Olds Sports Complex will be the site of flips and spins on the weekend as the Olds Figure Skating Club hosts Edge of Excellence: Central Region FunSkate.

Over 300 skaters from around Central Alberta are expected to participate in the two-day event that begins Friday morning on the auxiliary ice surface and continues through Saturday on both surfaces. Competition wraps ups Saturday night at 8:40 p.m.

Events and flights will be offered for all levels of StarSkate, including introductory, pre-preliminary, preliminary, junior bronze, senior bronze, junior silver, senior silver and gold. As well, Friday afternoon will include CanSkate competitors.

Most levels will feature competition in elements, freeskate, interpretive, solo dance and team while CanSkate will feature elements and program.

According to organizers the event is designed to give the skaters an opportunity to showcase their abilities in a fun environment.

Schedules and more information are available at the club's website: oldsfigureskating.com.

College curlers host qualifier

The Olds College curling teams will be back on the pebble this weekend when they host the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference Winter Regional and the Olds Curling Club.

Both men's and women's Broncos teams will be in action with the men's team of Adam Wutzke, Kory Roberge, Travis Paulgaard and Elliott Mansell looking to solidify their spot in the ACAC finals set for March 4-6 in Lloydminster.

The men's team sits at 3-3 following the fall regional in Edmonton, good for fourth place in the league standings. The top four in each division make the finals.

On the women's side, the 0-6 Broncos are looking to show improvement over the fall regional. The team sits ninth in the standings and would need a perfect weekend to have any chance of advancing to the finals.

The team, consisting of Samantha Klaver, Jennifer Lansdall, Nicole Dowell and Megan Thomas, begins play Friday at 1 p.m. against Augustana and wraps up the weekend on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. against NAIT.

For the men, they open Friday at 1p.m. against MacEwan and finish with a 9 a.m. Sunday matchup with Grande Prairie. There is a mixed draw as well featuring six schools, not including the Broncos.

All the action is at the Olds Curling Club throughout the weekend.
