Spruce View School honors the best

Spruce View School athletes from Grade 7 to 12 were honoured at their awards banquet on June 11.

Jenny Ciochetti, Canadian Olympic bobsleigh pusher/pilot, was the special guest speaker for the evening. She talked about her experiences as an Olympian and the balance of sports in her life.

“Have grace in all circumstances and be a good sport,” said Ciochetti, who lives in Calgary. “And obviously, do your best and compete well but remember it's just a sport in the end.”

Junior high students Cauy Schmidt and Kamryn Phillips were named as Athletes of the Year, while Taylor Phillips and Jordan Sinnamon took senior high honours.

“Our school teams had a good year,” said Ken Kure, athletic director of Spruce View School “Several of our athletes placed well in the Alberta Schools Athletic Association Provincial competitions earning silver in high jump and finishing as high as 10th place.”

Spruce View School's junior high boys' volleyball team won the Chinook's Edge Northern Athletic Association (CENAA), Chinook's Edge Athletic Association, and Central Western Alberta Junior High Athletic Association (CWAJHAA) banners.

The junior high track team won the Grade 8 CENAA banner. The Viking Grade 9 badminton team won the CENAA and CWAJHAA championships. The junior high boys basketball squad won the CENAA silver and CWAJHAA bronze.

The school's Most Improved Players were Lauren Savage, Riley McKain, Nick Patras, Sereya Nissen, Luke Sanche, Zachary Schweer, Hope McKnight, Jade Sinnamon, Laura Abraham, Jayden Koster, Taylor Phillips, Amber Alder, Annabelle La Londe, and Kassidy McKay.

Connor Sinnamon, Taylor Phillips, Michael Lougheed, Mya Little, Kirsten and Tyler Newsham, Jordan Sinnamon, Cauy Schmidt, Riley McKain, Brandon Manna, Kamryn Phillips, Caitlyn Wenzel, Krista Burns, Taylor Phillips, and Cassidy Schmidt were named Most Valuable Players for their athletic play.

“While we had a successful 2013-14 season, we could not have done it without our volunteers and parents who fundraised, refereed, and manned our Parents Advisory Council and Recreation Council,” said Kure.
