OLDS — Local throwing athletes had another good season, according to coach Rachel Andres.
Thirteen École Olds High School (ÉOHS) senior throwers and two junior throwers competed in divisionals in Sundre.
Of that figure, 10 progressed to Zones in Calgary and competed in 18 events.
Two throwers qualified for provincials in Medicine Hat in a total of three events.
Grade 12 student Adam Jorgenson represented ÉOHS in shot put, discus, and javelin at Zones.
“He took first place in shot put and disc and barely missed out on going to provincials in javelin as well, taking fourth place,” Andres wrote in an email.
“Second place was only 24 centimetres away, so it was a tight competition.”
At provincials, Jorgenson threw a new personal best of 40.10 metres (m) in discus to finish in first place.
He also threw a new personal best of 12.99 metres in shot put, placing second in that competition.
“He was close to breaking the Alberta Schools Athletic Association provincial record for the discus held by the last Olds high provincial champion, Andreas Troschke, who set the record in 2017,” Andres added.
Grade 11 student Ashley Hoppins qualified for provincials in shot put after placing second at Zones.
Andres noted that was quite a feat, as she had only taken up shot put as an event a few weeks ago.
At provincials, Hoppins took fifth place in shot put “for a strong finish to her very short throwing season,” Andres wrote.
At senior high Zones, Grade 10 student Nadine Jorgenson barely missed progressing to provincials, finishing third in shot put.
Grade 10 student Landon Erick also just missed qualifying for provincials after finishing third in in discus.
At junior high Zones, Grade 9 student Jett Rosch placed fourth in what Andres called “a very closely contested” boys discus event.
