The annual Olds Open Bonspiel attracted 24 teams, up from 22 last year, according to Jeff Miller, one of the event's organizers.

The spiel took place March 16-18 at the Olds Curling Rink.

Team Winter won the A event and the Phillips rink took the B event.  The C event was won by the Goller rink.

Miller has a theory as to why the bonspiel attracted so many teams  this year.

"We just kind of put a little extra effort into getting those 24 teams," he says. "That's kind of our goal, is to have 24 teams for that bonspiel."

"In comparison to last year we considered it a huge success."

Miller notes about half a dozen of those teams came from out of town, from as far as Calgary and Rocky Mountain House. He figures last year, the spiel attracted two to four out-of-town teams.

The accent was on having a good time.

"Everybody had a lot of fun," he says. "We did a skills competition on Saturday night. It was a St. Patrick's Day theme so we had some green beer for everybody Saturday in the lounge and all that kind of stuff."
