Two Sundre-raised curlers won the B event in the Men's Alberta Provincial Curling Championships last week, which were held in Leduc.
Dylan Webster and Craig Bourgonje, both 21, feel very fortunate to have played in the provincials, which went from Feb. 6 to Feb. 10.
The two of them partnered with Aaron and Justin Sluchinski to compete in the men's competition.
After losing its opening game in the A event, the team won its next four straight to claim the B event qualifier, including a final win over last year's champion Kevin Koe.
The win advanced the Sluchinski team to the playoff round, where they lost to eventual overall winner Kevin Martin of Edmonton.
The two Sundre curlers previously competed in the junior level for three years prior to entering men's play.
ìI felt good about my junior career, but I'm looking forward to playing men's and playing in the more high-calibre events,î said Webster.
ìI like the competition and it's a really social game, you meet lots of people and make good friends,î he added.
Having curled since age five, Webster has had an eventful curling career, with Bourgonje beside him most of the way, he said.
As a team, along with Parker Konschuh and Mac Walton, Webster and Bourgonje have been to three juvenile provincials, which cover age 17 and under, as well as three junior provincials, which involve age 20 and under.
This was their first provincials playing at the men's level.
Together, they have also competed in two Alberta Winter Games, including winning silver in 2008, and went on a Korean curling exchange in 2009.
ìDefinitely one day I'd like to play in the Brier and to represent Canada in the Olympics is the biggest goal,î said Webster.
Having curled since age nine, Bourgonje said he is proud of the team's accomplishments.
ìIt's probably the best competition we've ever had, a lot different from juniors,î said Bourgonje.
