OLDS — The season is over for the Olds Spartans football team.

The Ecole Olds High School team was beaten 34-17 by Bow Valley in in a hard-fought game in Red Deer on Nov 1.

“Football is truly a game of inches,” Spartans head coach Kent Lorenz wrote in an email. “A few plays here or there would have changed the outcome of the contest,”

He noted that despite the loss, the Spartans had a very successful season. The team finished first in its league.

“We had a great season, the players' commitment, positive attitude and hard work were definitely appreciated,” Lorenz wrote.

He also expressed the team’s gratitude for all the support they received from the community.

“Our parent group is fantastic and is behind us all the way,” he wrote.

Lorenz also gave a shoutout to École Olds High School staff and students for their “huge” support.

It was a big learning curve for many Spartan players this season.

Lorenz pointed out that there were 21 rookies on the team this year, 11 of whom were “new to the sport of football.”

They will lose nine students to graduation, but will also welcome several bantam Bulldog players who try out for the team next season. Nineteen will be eligble to do so.
