Three Olds throwing athletes win major awards

Liam Banks and Dayley Reimer as well as throwing athlete and coach Rachel Andres were honoured during the Calgary Track and Field (CALTAF) club annual awards, held Sept. 15 in Calgary

OLDS — Three local throwing athletes won awards during the Calgary Track and Field (CALTAF) club annual awards, held Sept. 15.

Liam Banks was named Senior Male Athlete of the Year and Dayley Reimer was declared the U20 Female Athlete of the Year.

Also, throwing athlete and coach Rachel Andres received the Senior Female Athlete of the Year award. Earlier in the year, she was named Athletics Alberta Women’s Athlete of the Year.

During a meet in Calgary that weekend, Jett Rosch, another athlete Andres coaches, turned in a stellar performance.

He increased his personal best to 44.12 metres (m), which was almost three metres further than he threw during his last competition a couple of weeks previously.

Things did not go so well that weekend for Andres.

“I had a muscle in my shoulder seize up Friday,” Andres wrote in an email. “I tried one throw at practice and couldn’t throw anymore. It was too painful.

“With me being meet director, I still needed to be at the meet on Saturday, so I figured I’d throw if I felt like it.

“I threw 53.68m without being able to move my head or neck and in quite a bit of pain.”

Andres admitted that was “not what I was hoping for” but noted she still has one more outdoor season meet to go. That will be on Sept. 28, once again in Calgary.
