The Innisfail Triathlon is still months away but athletes can get a head start on training this weekend.
Both athletes and those wanting to learn more about triathlons and how to train for them can register for a triathlon training clinic at the Innisfail Aquatic Centre on April 23 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
“We thought it would be a good way for people to learn how to train in a healthy way with a low injury rate,” said Dawn Murray, aquatic supervisor. “It's also a way to build up more interest in triathlons.”
Participants will learn from a certified competition level coach in a variety of areas, including new techniques to improve swim, bike and run times, building an effective practice session and working on transitions and drills.
“They're going to go over some techniques to improve their swimming, biking and running, and learn how to pick their equipment for different areas like running shoes and bike helmets,” said Murray. “They'll also learn how to brake and turn for emergencies on bikes.”
The clinic is being held partly due to the popularity of the triathlon event in Innisfail each summer and also to provide a training opportunity for local residents, said Murray.
“Our triathlon is pretty well attended,” she said. “We don't have a triathlon group here for people to get regular coaching so this would be a good way for them to open that door (to training).”
The training clinic will include both practical and theory tips through classroom-based sessions, noted Murray. She added these sessions will take place in the pool and outdoors.
“We could grow this into a support group where (people) can use us as their training base,” said Murray. “It's a great community. It's not always about how well you do, but about getting it done. The athletes are there to support you all the way through.”
