Captain Spencer Dorowicz scored the overtime winner on the power play with 0.5 seconds left on the clock to give the Olds Grizzlys a 2-1 win over the Grande Prairie Storm on Nov. 12 in Alberta Junior Hockey League action.
The Grizzlys got the win despite being outshot 35-27 overall and 28-18 in the last two periods and the extra frame.
The game was a fairly even contest with few scoring chances for either team throughout the game. The Grizzlys finished the game one-for-four on the power play while the Storm went zero-for-five.
After a scoreless first period, Grizzlys defenceman Matt Hanger and the Storm's Chase Thudium traded goals.
During a scoreless third period, Dorowicz raced in from centre ice on a short-handed breakaway midway through the period with Landon Kletke in the penalty box, but Storm goaltender Nick Kulmanovsky stopped the Grizzlys captain cold.
Following the game, Dorowicz said neither team played particularly well.
“I don't think it was a great game overall by either team but we managed to get the job done and we'll take the two points,” he said.
Dorowicz said he was disappointed that he was thwarted on his breakaway chance but he was fortunate enough to get another chance in overtime.
“It feels good to get that goal and get the W,” he said.
Dorowicz added that Grizzlys goaltender Ethan Jemieff played well in net, giving the Grizzlys the opportunity to capitalize on the few chances they had.
“They got a few chances early and (Jemieff) just kept us in the game the full 60 minutes and we're extremely lucky to have a goalie like him to carry us,” he said.
Olds wasn't so lucky when it came to battling the Camrose Kodiaks in Camrose on Nov. 14.
It was again a one-point game with Camrose edging the Grizzlys 4-3 for the win.
The Grizzlys' Nov. 19 game against the Drumheller Dragons was cancelled due to poor road conditions.
