Olds High School
The Olds Spartans junior A girls' volleyball team concluded its season recently at the top of the South Central Zone during league play.
Out of the five schools in the league, the Olds team finished first, Didsbury second, Koinonia third, Cremona fourth and Carstairs fifth when league play ended Nov. 15.
Coach Kelvin Beaudry said the 11 players on the team had a range of experience coming into the season and all finished it with improved skills.
"I think the game started to slow down for them and they were able to anticipate the plays more," said Beaudry, who was helped on the court by Larissa Cameron. "The ...of the game improves, skills improve and it all comes together."
He said the team definitely belonged in the 4J zones, held Nov. 18 at Olds High School.
Seven teams battled it out on the court.
"Every team had their highs and lows," said the coach, adding there were some really good rallies.
Olds had an injured player.
Okotoks' John Paul II team won the zone championship with Chestermere finishing in second place.
Olds finished fourth overall after losing to Brooks.
"I'm extremely proud of each of them," said Beaudry of the Olds players.
The team was supported throughout the season by the community and parents and those who came out to cheer them on and support them during zones, he said.
