Olds College's women's basketball team led from the opening tipoff to the final buzzer en route to a 91-48 victory over the Briercrest College Clippers on Oct. 18 at the Ralph Klein Centre gym.
The win gives the Broncos a 2-0 record to start their season after beating the Clippers 81-53 the night before.
For the second straight game, Broncos centre Renetha Burton received the player-of-the-game honour, recording 24 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four blocks.
Five members of the Broncos had double-digit scoring, including Marie Lupe, Melanie Thera, Jasmine Williams and Mary Krause.
“(I'm) very, very proud of the girls,” said Burton, who comes to Olds from Arizona. “If we keep doing what we're doing now, we'll get exactly where I want to be, which is playing for a title.”
It was just the start that head coach Reg Carrick had prepared his team for.
“We had a good week of practice and that rolled right into this game. It was a total team effort,” Carrick said. “We got contributions from everybody who played for us.”
The Clippers shot 25 per cent from the floor and committed 34 turnovers against a Broncos defence that stifled Briercrest's ability to advance the ball into the frontcourt.
“We're mixing up our defence more than we have in the past so we're showing a little 2-2-1 press,” Carrick said.
“We've got some quickness at the point guard and shooting guard positions so that makes us pretty tough up front in that press.”
From October 24 to 25, the team will play a pair of games on the road against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers before hosting the Red Deer College Queens on Nov. 7.
